BUDDY PURYEAR
An Introduction to a Unique Ministry

After serving 30 years in the navy as a nuclear submarine officer, serving on 5 different submarines, culminating in command of the USS SPADEFISH, I retired. My wife and I settled in Alamance County, NC, and we joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church (Pastor Steve Loy) in Burlington, NC.  We are both very active in the church.  I serve as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School teacher.

Even as involved as I am in church, I felt like God had something more for me to do for Him. I began praying, seeking His will, never considering that He would use my expertise as a submarine officer in His service.

In November 2014 Dr.Tolbert Moore was one of the preachers at our Fall Jubilee. He stayed in our home that week during the meeting.

We talked for hours about the work of God and about what my life’s work had been; he told me about the GPA Mobilization Ministries Mercy Project (headed up by his son, Gary Moore.) He told me about their fly away medical/evangelistic teams taking  trips to different places in the Caribbean and other fields for the past 8 years with doctors, nurses, and evangelistic teams volunteering their time and paying their own way to have a part in this great mission outreach.

And, then he told me that they had just raised the money and paid for a 110 x 25 foot vessel (now called MERCY’S VESSEL) to house the clinic, supplies, and berth and feed the teams during the trips. Dr. Moore said, “You need to contact my son. He needs your help! You could make a great difference in the success of this ministry!”

In June 2015 my wife, Mary, and I were asked to serve on MERCY’S VESSEL, with me being the Captain. We were approved as full time missionaries with The Gospel Preacher Association in August 2015.

My military pension covers our basic living expenses. We are raising monthly support and one time love offerings to cover traveling expenses to and from the ship and to do advance work on the mission fields to be sure we locate the exact ports and places to dock the ship where we can reach and minister to as many as possible.  Each destination will have different requirements, permits, and restrictions. We must make sure everything is in order for our teams’ safety and effectiveness.

I would appreciate the opportunity to be in one of your services, missions conferences, preachers’ fellowships or even a Sunday school class. We have a 7 minute video which I believe your people will enjoy and be moved by as they see what is being done for the Cause of Christ through the Mercy Project and soon MERCY’S VESSEL MINISTRY!

God bless you for your time and consideration.

Serving HIM joyfully,

Buddy Puryear, Captain MERCY’S VESSEL
